Micro Goals. Lunar New Year. On Losing Five Pounds.

On losing five lbs. and losing five more lbs.

I’ve never been a person that has habitually written down my goals. Yes, I’ve written goals down now and again. I confess my usual way I accomplish goals is from a place of, and phrase “fixate and go!” Perhaps unconventional but I’ve accomplished a lot with “fixate and go!”

Irony. When I coach clients we create time designing and redesigning their goals.

This year I tried something different. I love the idea of handwritten goals on my custom letterpress stationery @bygeorgepress. Inspired by my dear friend Christine Murray I borrowed her yearly ritual to write down a handful of goals on the first day of Lunar New Year, also known as the Spring Festival. This year January 22, 2023 marks the start of a new lunar year.

Which got me thinking several years ago I was home for a visit and Christine and I went to the Chinese New Year Parade in San Francisco. I was completely focused on going to the parade. It was a cold, crisp night with no fog, unusual for San Francisco. It reminded me of how many years Christine and I have been friends. And that some friends, you know your friends that will go do whatever, whenever and laugh with you, even when you’re standing outside for hours on a cold, crisp night! Okay, I digress.

Some people may disagree that micro goals are not big enough, they are not scary enough! I say fine and let’s agree to disagree.

In early 2019 I made a short list of goals, yes, handwritten. Two of the goals on my list, lose five lbs. and lose five more lbs. I thought it would be a miracle if I lost five lbs. I had always been good at losing weight and very good at gaining it all back, again! I was tired and yes, I had a bit of envy too when it came to reading about people successfully losing weight.

However, by the end of 2019 I had lost 22.5 lbs. Somewhere in between my thoughts became “I know how to do this. What if I could be the person? What if I could coach one woman to lose weight? I’m in! This is so much fun!”

I have this thing about having fun! If I’m going to do something. Why not make it fun? Future blog post.

So yes, “fixate and go” was exactly what I did. I became a Holistic Nutrition and Health Coach. I’m a graduate of the Health Coach Training Program and Coaching Intensive Practicum through the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. I launched my holistic nutrition and health coaching practice @monicamakeswellness. Currently, in my down time between coaching clients I’m working on my certification to become a Certified Life Coach through the Coach Certification Program by the Life Coach School.

I never thought I’d be writing a blog post about losing weight.

While I was writing this post, my husband popped-in and I shared the idea that some individuals view micro goals as not being big enough or scary enough and l loved my husband’s take “You can sneak up on big things.” The mark of this Lunar New Year is different for me. I have kept 22.5+ lbs. off for four years and have learned how to keep it off for good. Which has allowed me to “…. sneak up on big things.”

Five lbs., five more lbs. or 10 lbs.?

Is there a micro goal on your mind?
